The Dell at Mt. Auburn Cemetery
The Dell at Mt. Auburn Cemetery is as close to being a sacred spot as I know in birding. It is not just the great variety of birds that pass through. It is the whole scene--the way deep woods birds become approachable, the way the bowl of the Dell captures birdsong, and the way reverence fills the air (it is a cemetery after all). At the Dell you can hear the little warbly detail in the ovenbird's song before it launches into "teacher teacher." (And watch him sing it). At the Dell you get both full blown wood thrush rhapsodizing (with sweet acoustics) and also a chance to hear the swainson's thrush's whispery songs.
As for the profane... I'm keeping count again. I'm up to a lifetime 181 thanks to the yellow-throated warbler at Mt. Auburn I spotted. It would be nice to reach 200 by the beginning of summer. Stay tuned! Big things are planned for my next excursion. (Oh, and here's another shot at trying to get a good Magnolia Warbler photo.)
