The bird of the day was the red-breasted nuthatch, seemingly everywhere and making a lot of noise. 13 is an undercount, for sure.

Crows really took a hit from West Nile it seems. I wonder how long before resistant crow strains come about.
Here's a project... Thornton Burgess song covers.
I recall he had a few ditties laced into his stories.
One I remember was:
"Sammy Jay's a handsome chap,
He wears a coat of blue,
I wonder if that's really his,
Or if he stole that too.."
There are a couple of over-stuffed folders in the Burgess archives that hold nothing but page after page of his rhyming aphorisms. Apparently he wrote a pop song lyric or two in his earlier days.
There is a Built to Spill cover of that ancient Yankee children's song,

Between Thoreau and Burgess, Beston and Carson and the earlier 20th century prominence of Northeastern Fly Fishing, I get a sense that many of the nation's notions of the Living World were shaped here.

Yes, in fact Northeast animal life still has a kind of hegemony when it comes to thinking about "normal" American wildlife.
The Prescott thing might not be far-fetched, if you consider what happened with the Del Fuegos...
