Cold Little Coot

Great Meadows NWR, Concord, MA

A frigid morning at Great Meadows. Almost completely iced over. This lonely coot (check out its feet!) was hanging out in the middle of the dike.

When it saw me coming, it found a protected area by a tree and nestled there.

I wonder how it got left all alone.

Also, bonus bluebirds! Apparently surviving on berries.

Nice images... Yes, several of us have been concerned for this lone coot. Seems he must have an injury that kept him from flying away with the others when the last open water froze over on Thursday night. Some visitors found a frozen sora rail last week. Hard going for these little feathered ones.

Aha, I saw some mention of this on MassBird. Hope there's (at least a) partial thaw this week...
