Sharp-shinned hawk disrupts Broadmoor sparrow party

All the sparrows (especially white-throated and tree sparrows) in the Metrowest area appear to be living in South Natick around the feeders at Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary. Everyone chattering at once, with the pine siskins throwing in a occasional zreet and the juncos plinking away.

Until the sharp-shinned hawk showed up. Suddenly everything went quiet, and when the hawk swooped in closer, there was a mad rush. Tree, house, white-throat, junco, song all rushing past. The chickadees were the only ones left, dededede-ing the alarm. (And then I foolishly got too close and the hawk was gone).

peter - about local hawks - you should drive on greenough boulevard one of these days from harvard square to watertown. This morning I saw three hawks (or maybe falcons?) two were flying around close above the road and then one of them swooped down onto a tree directly attacking a third one. I can't tell you more because I nearly swerved into the snow bank at that point. You would have to get out and walk - there's a bike trail all along it (the charles of course) so it wouldn't be hard. You might get some good pictures.

Thanks Beth! I haven't explored the lower Charles very much.
